Amazon Player - Release Candidate Version (4.x)

The new, upcoming version of our Amazon player app (4.x) has been built from the ground up and will significantly improve the stability and user experience of our Android player app across the board by embedding the latest version of Chrome into the app, which greatly improves content rendering and performance, especially on devices with older versions of Fire OS. This version will also include many bug fixes and improvements.

We will be releasing this version of our Amazon player app for all of our users soon, but are making it available now as a Release Candidate version for anyone who wants to test it on their devices.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to update to our new player app on your devices.

1. Prepare your Amazon Fire TV device for sideloading the app update

In order to install this app update on your device, you will need to use a process called "sideloading". When referring to Android apps, sideloading typically means installing an application package in APK format onto an Android device via USB, Bluetooth, WiFi or another similar method. You will need to change some settings to prepare your device for sideloading apps. (You can also follow the steps below via this guide by Lifewire.)

1.1 Open the "Settings" menu, then go to "My Fire TV" > "Developer Options".

1.2. Click on "Apps from unknown sources" to enable it. When you get a warning message to confirm that you want to run apps from unknown sources, click "Turn On". 


2. Sideload the app update to your Android device

2.1 Use the search function to search for the "Downloader" app on Amazon's app store. Locate "Downloader" in the search results and click on it, then select "Download" to download it. Once the app installs, open it.

2.1. In the Download app, go to, which will download the Android player app (4.x) to your device.

2.2. When the download is complete, click "Install" to install the app (if the app is already installed on your device it may ask you to "Update").
