Variable Duration Apps – Content Playing Randomly

by Nor Kanjanahattakij

Hello and thank you for visiting our ScreenCloud Help Center. This article will go through what variable duration is and what apps are affected by this on ScreenCloud.

A common question is why some content will randomly start playing first even though it is not ordered first in a playlist. This is due to apps that run on what is called variable duration.

If you have content with variable duration in the playlist then ScreenCloud will play that content first. This is a normal behavior on Signage as it was designed to support syncing multiple screens.

Examples of apps that use variable duration are Youtube and Google Slides. You will be prompted which apps have variable duration when adding them into a playlist.

However, we will gradually improve the overall signage behaviors in the future.

If you have any additional questions or concerns on variable duration or apps which use this, or any other questions or feedback about ScreenCloud, feel free to reach out to our support team at or give us a call at +1-415-449-5426, then follow the prompts to reach support.
